Perry's most famous accomplishment was his role in the opening of Japan to the West. In 1853, he led a fleet of American ships to Japan and forced the Japanese to sign a treaty that opened up the country to trade. This treaty had a major impact on Japan's history and helped to bring the country into the modern world.
Perry was a complex and controversial figure. He was a brilliant naval officer, but he was also a ruthless imperialist. He was responsible for the deaths of many Japanese people, and his actions helped to set the stage for Japan's colonization by the West.
